Six operators fly shared balloons at dawn from fields on the Carretera México-Tulancingo, from MX$1,990 per adult; flights last 30 to 60 minutes, the wind sets the route, and the pyramids are not guaranteed.
A flight at Teotihuacan is 30 to 60 minutes in the air at dawn, depending on the operator and the wind. No operator flies in the afternoon or at sunset. Sky Balloons and Aventura en Globos give about 5 hours door to door from Mexico City, or about 3 hours at the field.
You land wherever the wind takes the basket, and a ground crew drives you back. Passing over the pyramids is not promised: WeFly, Sky Balloons and Flying Pictures all state that the route depends on the wind.
The balloons do reach the zone. On 21 April 2026 the Federal Civil Aviation Agency, AFAC, recorded one landing beside the Pyramid of the Sun.
Every published launch field is at km 27.3 to 28.0 of the Carretera México-Tulancingo, in San Francisco Mazapa and San Martín de las Pirámides. WeFly is at km 27.3, Aventura en Globos at km 27.5, Flying Pictures at km 27.51 and Sky Balloons at km 28.0.
In April 2023 a deputy counted 18 launch sites in Congress, 13 of them in San Martín de las Pirámides. No operator publishes a distance from its field to the gates. WeFly gives you the one measure: 7 minutes by car to La Gruta, 200 m from Gate 5, Puerta 5 on INAH’s map. Both villages are on the San Juan Teotihuacán page.
Six operators publish peso prices on their own sites, from MX$1,990 per adult for a shared flight at WeFly to MX$2,900 at Volare.
| Operator | Shared, per adult | Private | Flight, min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sky Balloons | MX$2,899 | MX$4,500 per person | 30 to 45 |
| Aventura en Globos | MX$2,250 | MX$6,800 per couple | 40 to 60 |
| Volare | MX$2,900 | MX$8,500 for two | 30 to 50 |
| WeFly | MX$1,990 weekdays | MX$3,750 | 45 to 60 |
| Vuelos en Globo MX | MX$2,300 | MX$3,750 | 45 to 60 |
| Flying Pictures | MX$2,599 | MX$11,500 per couple | 45 to 60 |
The Aventura en Globos fare is a promotion. Volare sells from MX$2,610 on selected Tuesdays and Wednesdays. WeFly’s MX$1,990 is Monday to Friday; MX$2,300 buys any day with a buffet breakfast. WeFly does not say whether MX$3,750 is per person or per basket.
Vuelos en Globo MX is a booking agency flying from the WeFly field, at MX$2,300 with an offer of MX$1,990. Marketplace prices in US dollars are on the hot air balloon tours page; WeFly’s price page has the lowest fare.
Every shared fare, from MX$1,990, includes a toast after landing and a certificate; most list a coffee and passenger insurance. Breakfast is in the price at 4 of the 6. WeFly’s weekday fare and Flying Pictures list none. Transport from Mexico City is an add-on of MX$450 to MX$500 per person at Aventura en Globos, Sky Balloons and Volare.
Pickups collect you from 04:00 to 05:30 at the Ángel de la Independencia or at hotels; returns reach Mexico City between 10:00 and 14:30. All-inclusive packages add the MX$210 zone ticket. Sky Balloons’ Aventura package is MX$3,399; its MX$3,850 cave version eats at La Cueva, a different restaurant from La Gruta.
WeFly’s All Inclusive is MX$3,600 with breakfast at La Gruta. Flying Pictures’ transport and pyramids package is MX$3,250 with free time in the zone. The tickets page has the gate prices.
The minimum age is 4 or 5 years with a height of 1.10 to 1.20 m, by operator. Sky Balloons and Aventura en Globos take children from 4 years and 1.20 m. WeFly asks 5 years and 1.10 m; Volare and Flying Pictures 5 years.
WeFly includes 99 kg and charges MX$45 per extra kilo; Aventura en Globos includes 110 kg at MX$20 per kilo up to 150 kg. Volare covers 110 kg, maximum 150 kg; Flying Pictures stops at 125 kg and Sky Balloons at 140 kg. You are weighed at the field.
Five operators publish a rule on pregnancy: none takes pregnant passengers. Bring photo ID: WeFly needs it for the insurance, and Volare treats it as your boarding pass. WeFly’s prices exclude IVA; 16 percent is added if you ask for an invoice.
Operators cancel above 10 to 20 km/h of wind, in fog or heavy rain, and most rebook you rather than refund. The limits: Vuelos en Globo MX 10 km/h, Aventura en Globos 12, WeFly 15, Sky Balloons 20.
Volare and Aventura en Globos let you choose a refund. WeFly and Vuelos en Globo MX refund the fare only to foreign or non-resident passengers; transport and extras are not refunded.
Your own cancellation costs more. Sky Balloons and Aventura en Globos keep 35 percent with 72 hours’ notice and 100 percent inside 72 hours. WeFly charges 35 to 50 percent inside 72 hours and 100 percent for a no-show. Volare is free up to 48 hours before; Flying Pictures refunds minus 10 percent up to 48 hours.
A press tally of 27 April 2026 counted at least 12 accidents between 2022 and 2026. The regulator is AFAC, under SICT. An operator needs an AFAC permit, insurance and licensed pilots; a commercial aerostat licence takes at least 50 hours of instruction. Sky Balloons states an inspection every year or every 100 flight hours.
On 1 April 2023 a flight caught fire inside the zone and 2 people died. On 23 May 2025 a Sky Balloons flight fell near the Pyramid of the Moon; 12 people were injured. On 31 January 2026 three crews made emergency landings. On 16 March 2026 a Happy Puerto flight hit power lines; 2 passengers were burned.
On 29 March 2026 AFAC inspected 23 of the 46 balloons in operation. Civil Protection sealed three operators: Volar en Globo, Nuevo Ciclo and “Sky Ballons”, as AFAC spells it. On 21 April 2026 a Balloons Paradise flight landed inside the zone.
We found no new AFAC rule after 2023, only inspections. We found no statement lifting the March 2026 seals. Book with an operator whose AFAC permit number is on its site: Volare publishes TAN-PC-SE-VP-022.
WeFly names the 6 months from November to April as the best, with less rain. Vuelos en Globo MX names spring and autumn, and lists Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, July and August as high season. Mornings are cold: Flying Pictures tells you to dress warmly. Winter cold fronts bring the gusts that cancel flights, as on 1 February 2026.
By the sun: check-in 05:30 to 06:00, in the air by 07:00, down by 08:00, then breakfast. The zone gates open at 08:00, so a package with the pyramids gets you to them by 10:00. The hottest hours are 11:30 to 15:30.
With your own car, leave Mexico City at about 03:30 for a 05:30 check-in. The road is on the getting there page; INAH’s visitor guide has the zone hours.

From MX$1,990 per adult for a shared flight Monday to Friday at WeFly to MX$2,900 at Volare, on the operators' own sites. Sky Balloons charges MX$2,899, Flying Pictures MX$2,599 and Aventura en Globos MX$2,250 as a promotion. Private flights run from MX$3,750 at WeFly to MX$8,500 for two at Volare. Transport from Mexico City adds MX$450 to MX$500; packages with the pyramids cost MX$3,250 to MX$3,600.
Not on every flight. WeFly, Sky Balloons and Flying Pictures all state that the route depends on the wind and that passing over the pyramids is not guaranteed. WeFly sells the view of the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon only if the weather allows. The balloons do reach the zone: on 21 April 2026 the regulator AFAC recorded a Balloons Paradise flight landing beside the Pyramid of the Sun.
Between 06:00 and 07:00, after a check-in of 05:30 to 06:00 at the field. Sky Balloons checks in at 05:45 and flies at 06:00; Volare boards at 06:30; Aventura en Globos and WeFly fly from 07:00. No operator flies in the afternoon or at sunset. Operator transport collects you in Mexico City between 04:00 and 05:30; with your own car you leave at about 03:30 for a 05:30 check-in, by WeFly's estimate.
The safety record is a list of dated events. On 1 April 2023 a balloon caught fire inside the zone and 2 people died. On 23 May 2025 a Sky Balloons flight fell near the Pyramid of the Moon with 12 injured. On 16 March 2026 a Happy Puerto balloon hit power lines and 2 passengers were burned. A press tally of 27 April 2026 counted at least 12 accidents since 2022. On 29 March 2026 AFAC sealed three operators after an inspection.
The operator cancels and offers a new date. The limits are 10 km/h at Vuelos en Globo MX, 12 km/h at Aventura en Globos, 15 km/h at WeFly and 20 km/h at Sky Balloons; fog and heavy rain also ground the flights. Volare and Aventura en Globos let you choose a refund instead. WeFly and Vuelos en Globo MX refund the flight fare only to foreign or non-resident passengers. Transport and extras are not refunded.
30 to 60 minutes in the air, depending on the operator and the wind on the day. Sky Balloons gives 30 to 45 minutes, Volare 30 to 50, Aventura en Globos 40 to 60, WeFly and Flying Pictures 45 to 60. Count about 3 hours at the field with check-in, inflation, the toast and breakfast, and about 5 hours door to door with transport from Mexico City.
