Gate 5840 m · 11 min on foot from Gate 5 to the Pyramid of the Sun
Three museums stand inside the archaeological zone, and your MX$210 ticket covers all of them. Each one sits at a different gate. The Museum of Teotihuacan Culture, the Museo de la Cultura Teotihuacana, is at Gate 5, south of the Pyramid of the Sun.
The Museum of Teotihuacan Murals, the Museo de Murales Teotihuacanos “Beatriz de la Fuente”, is at Gate 3, by the Pyramid of the Moon. The Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture, the Museo de la Grandeza Teotihuacana, is beside Gate 1, by the Ciudadela. It is the newest: it opened in June 2026.
The oldest of the three opened in 1994. All three keep the same hours, 09:00 to 16:00, every day of the week. You pay once at any gate; the museum fee is in that ticket.
The Museum of Teotihuacan Culture stands 530 m south of the Pyramid of the Sun, 7 minutes on foot, on the Gate 5 side. It opened in 1994 on the platform of the 1910 museum, the first on the site, ordered by President Porfirio Díaz. More than 600 objects of stone, wood, bone, shell and obsidian fill eight galleries.
Your visit ends at a large window with the Pyramid of the Sun in it, above a model of the whole city. INAH renovated the galleries in 2026, the first work on them in about 40 years. The model is still there. The museum has toilets and seating. Water is sold there.
From the gate: Gate 5, Puerta 5 on INAH’s map, by the museum, 840 m and 11 minutes to the Pyramid of the Sun. The metres and minutes are measured on the map, not INAH figures. La Gruta, the cave restaurant, is 200 m from Gate 5, behind the pyramid.
The Museum of Teotihuacan Murals holds 73 pieces in nine rooms, at the Gate 3 entrance. It opened in 2001 and was refurbished in 2006. The pieces are mural fragments, whole taludes and tableros, and painted wall sections.
INAH names one piece: the Mythological Animals mural from the Avenue of the Dead, the Calzada de los Muertos, feathered serpents fighting jaguars. A botanical garden stands beside the museum. Its galleries were renovated in 2026 together with those at Gate 5.
From the gate you walk 530 m and 7 minutes to the Pyramid of the Moon. Gate 3 also serves the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl. Toilets and water for sale are at the entrance. The Tepantitla murals have their own page.
The Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture opened in June 2026 with 174 pieces, beside Gate 1. About 150 are shown for the first time. The building dates from 1962 and had been closed for 20 years. Hours are 09:00 to 16:00. The zone ticket includes it.
It is the first stop on the Explorer’s Trail if you enter at Gate 1. The trail crosses the whole city to the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun. It leaves at Gate 5 after 5 to 6 km and 4 to 5 hours. From Gate 1 the Temple of the Feathered Serpent is 710 m and 10 minutes.
All three museums open 09:00 to 16:00, every day, with no weekly closing day. The INAH museum pages give those hours; the digital guide gives a later close, 16:30. Plan on 16:00. The zone itself opens 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30.
The ticket is MX$210 for international visitors and MX$105 with a Mexican ID. Sundays are free for nationals and residents. You buy it at the booths of the five gates; the tickets page lists the exemptions. You need no separate museum ticket.
Both older museums shut on 21 and 22 March 2026 for the spring equinox operation. The 2026 renovation cost MX$37 million. It paid for the museum galleries, new ticket booths, walkways, access portals, signage, security equipment and the free INAH digital guide. The guide is in Spanish and English, with audio at the points of interest and the map of the seven trails.
The museums are your shade for the hottest hours, 11:30 to 15:30; put the pyramids before them. The gates open at 08:00 and the museums at 09:00, so the pyramids come first. INAH names Tuesday and Wednesday as the quieter days.
By the sun: in at Gate 5 at 08:00, the Pyramid of the Sun, the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture by 11:30 when the heat starts. Then north to the Pyramid of the Moon, 1.0 km from the Sun, and out at Gate 3 through the Museum of Teotihuacan Murals. If you enter at Gate 1, the Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture is your first stop.
The INAH Family Trail runs the other way, from Gate 3 to Gate 5. Its stops are the Pyramid of the Moon, the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl, the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture and the Pyramid of the Sun. It is 1.5 km and 1.5 to 2 hours.
