Teotihuacan has 5 gates on the ring road round the archaeological zone, Puerta 1 to Puerta 5 on INAH’s map. Three stand on the western side of that road, two on the eastern side. Each gate has a ticket office and a parking area.
Gate 1 is the south gate, for the Ciudadela and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. The Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture stands beside it. Buses from Terminal del Norte, the Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte, drop passengers here and at Gate 2.
Gate 2 faces the Pyramid of the Sun across the Avenue of the Dead, the Calzada de los Muertos. The return bus to Mexico City leaves from Gate 2 every 15 minutes.
Gate 3 is the west gate for the Plaza of the Moon, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl. The Museum of Teotihuacan Murals stands at the entrance, with toilets and water for sale.
Gate 4 is behind the Pyramid of the Sun, on the eastern side of the ring road. The step-free Accessible Trail starts here. Tepantitla is just outside the gate, on the road to San Francisco Mazapa.
Gate 5 is the east gate for the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture, south of the Pyramid of the Sun. La Gruta, the cave restaurant, is 200 m from the gate.
A parking area adjoins each of the 5 gates on the INAH map. No parking fee is published. If you drive, the Mexico City tollway reaches the roundabout at Gate 1. The road from San Juan Teotihuacán reaches Gate 2. The one from San Francisco Mazapa reaches Gate 4.
Since late April 2026 every gate has a walk-through metal detector; your bags and your vehicle are inspected. Toilets are at Gate 3 and at the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture. The INAH map also marks them at Gate 1, Gate 2 and Gate 5. Water is sold at the museum and at Gate 3.
Tickets are MX$210 for international visitors at the booths; the tickets page has the exemptions.
The free INAH digital guide draws 7 trails, and 3 of them decide your gate. The Quick Trail is 2 km, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. It enters at Gate 2 and passes the Pyramid of the Sun and the Puma Mural. It leaves at Gate 3, by the Plaza of the Moon.
The Explorer’s Trail is 5 to 6 km and 4 to 5 hours, entering at Gate 1 and leaving at Gate 5. Its stops run from the Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture and the Ciudadela up the Avenue to the Pyramid of the Moon. Then it returns to the Pyramid of the Sun and the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture.
The Accessible Trail has no steps: 2 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from Gate 4. It takes you to the Plaza of the Moon, both pyramids and the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture. An optional leg from Gate 3 reaches the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl by a ramp about 500 m along a path.
The metres and minutes on this Teotihuacan map are measured on OpenStreetMap walking routes; INAH publishes no such figures. The figures include no stopping time. Add your own time at each pyramid and museum.
From the gate: Gate 2, 530 m and 7 minutes to the foot of the Pyramid of the Sun. Gate 3, 530 m and 7 minutes to the Pyramid of the Moon and 200 m and 3 minutes to the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl. Gate 1, 710 m and 10 minutes to the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

The Avenue of the Dead is 40 m wide and about 5 km long. About 2 km of it is open to visitors, from the Ciudadela to the Plaza of the Moon. It rises about 27 m from south to north, so from Gate 1 you walk uphill.
The archaeological zone open to visitors covers 264 ha. INAH recommends starting at the Ciudadela and keeping the Pyramid of the Sun for last if you arrive early.
Gate 2 for the bus, Gate 1 for the full walk, Gate 3 for the Pyramid of the Moon. Gate 4 for a step-free visit, Gate 5 for lunch at La Gruta.
By bus: Gate 2 in, Gate 2 out. The bus from Mexico City drops you there, and the return bus leaves from the same gate every 15 minutes. The catch: a walk that ends at Gate 5 leaves you on the opposite side of the archaeological zone from your bus.
The full walk: Gate 1 in, Gate 5 out. That is the Explorer’s Trail, 4 to 5 hours, and INAH recommends the same starting point. You finish at the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture, with toilets, seating and water.
A short visit with the Pyramid of the Moon: Gate 3, 530 m from the pyramid. The catch: the return bus is at Gate 2, so you walk back to it.
Step-free: Gate 4 and the Accessible Trail, 2 km with no steps. Lunch at La Gruta: Gate 5, 200 m from the restaurant.
