Is Teotihuacan worth visiting?

Yes, for a full day: a UNESCO site since 1987, a 2 km avenue, three museums in the MX$210 ticket and about 60 minutes by bus from Mexico City. Shorten it in the heat or with half a day.

Yes, for a full day: at its peak, 350 to 550 CE, Teotihuacan was the largest city in the Americas. INAH estimates over 100,000 inhabitants on 20 km², the sixth largest city of the ancient world. UNESCO listed it in 1987.

The MX$210 ticket covers 264 ha of archaeological zone and three museums. Almost 2 million visitors arrive annually. From Mexico City, about 50 km away, the bus takes 60 minutes in normal traffic.

When is Teotihuacan worth a full day?

A full day fits the 3 to 5 hours INAH recommends, the bus each way and the morning before the heat. The gates open daily at 08:00. INAH tells you to arrive before 09:00 and to begin at the Ciudadela, inside Gate 1, Puerta 1 on INAH’s map.

From there the Avenue of the Dead, the Calzada de los Muertos, runs about 2 km north to the Plaza of the Moon. It is 40 m wide and rises 27 m from south to north.

The Pyramid of the Sun, about 65 m high, stands on the eastern side. The Pyramid of the Moon, 45 m, closes the northern end. Between the two pyramids you walk 1.0 km and 14 minutes, measured on the map.

Your ticket includes three museums. The Museum of the Great Teotihuacan Culture beside Gate 1 reopened in June 2026 with 174 objects. The Museum of Teotihuacan Culture is beside Gate 5. The Museum of Teotihuacan Murals is beside Gate 3.

By the sun: in at Gate 1 at 08:00, the Ciudadela first, the Plaza of the Moon before 10:30, a museum from 11:30 when the hottest hours begin.

When should you shorten a visit to Teotihuacan?

Shorten it when 5 to 6 km in the sun is too far, when the climb is your reason, or with half a day.

The Explorer’s Trail from Gate 1 to Gate 5 is that distance: 4 to 5 hours of walking. The hottest hours are 11:30 to 15:30, and INAH publishes nothing about shade. The Quick Trail from Gate 2 to Gate 3 is 2 km, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. The Accessible Trail from Gate 4 is 2 km without steps, 2 to 2.5 hours.

Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun is not allowed. Its stairway has been closed since 2020. INAH reopened the Pyramid of the Moon to its first platform on 19 May 2025, and nothing higher. On 22 May 2026 the press reported it as the only pyramid open to climb. The dated rules are on the climbing page.

With half a day you have the Quick Trail and the bus, or a half-day tour of 6 hours or less.

How much does Teotihuacan cost and how long does it take?

The ticket is MX$210 at the gate for international visitors, and the visit INAH recommends is 3 to 5 hours. Mexican nationals and foreign residents with identification pay MX$105, and Sundays are free for them. Tickets are sold at the offices of the five gates; we found no official online sale. The tickets page has the exemptions.

The bus from Terminal del Norte, the Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte, leaves every 15 minutes from 06:00 to 21:00. It takes about 60 minutes and delivers you to Gate 1 or Gate 2; the return leaves from Gate 2. The fare is MX$60 each way, the figure reported by the press from 1 October 2026.

By car INAH gives 45 to 60 minutes on the motorways 85D and 132D. The Zócalo to Gate 1 is 47.5 km, measured on the map. Last entry is 16:30, and the archaeological zone closes at 17:00.

The best tours are listed by what the price buys. The time page has the hours for every trail and the bus.
